What’s up next?

Well, this has just been beamed…..

finished warp

It isn’t a great photo, but you get the idea I hope. I will try to get a better photo when it is earlier than 11:25 pm, and maybe even with some “real” light soon. See the box of yarn at the centre top? That is 27 spools of the 19 colours that went into this “designed while warping” piece. This is a one of a kind warp, that will never be reproduced. (Mostly because I am nowhere near patient enough to write down the colour of every thread as I put it in the heddles, especially when there are multiple colours that are very similar to others used)

The first piece is a custom order for a lovely lady, but there will be two more pieces woven from this same warp, and if you are on my email list, you will want to keep an eye on your inbox!

(not telling what this offer will be yet, I need some sleep before I start threading and sleying tomorrow!)

Vacation

I have been pretty busy the last few months, lots of weaving, customs, commissions, and gifts aplenty. Then add going to the gym many days each week, two or three hockey games, knitting and weaving groups.  That is a lot to do each day. Throw into that mix, a house, husband, kids, and all of their activities, and it is downright silly at times.

So I am going on vacation. From the 17th until the 22nd, I will be going out of town with my husband, while my children are at home with Grandma. I will have no email access, and limited internet.

If you need to contact me, please email me (kathy@rocklakeweaving.com), and  I will reply once I am home.

Thank you for your patience, and have a great week!

Kathy

Sometimes things get messy.

If you know a weaver, you have probably heard them talking about sampling.  This is the process of trying things out. It can tell you many things, like how the finished project will feel after washing, how much it will shrink, will the threads shift, how the colours will look together, and many other things.

Unfortunately, it also shows you your mistakes.  I am working on a sample of a tartan right now. Tartans are pretty specific, and you really cannot afford to make a mistake and throw a shot of white, when you are supposed to throw blue.

I measured, and beamed, and threaded 240 threads, wove some plain weave, measuring every colour, to check how many shots I need to throw to get the correct pattern. Then I compared to the sample that I was sent, and realised that I needed a little less green and a little more blue. So I cut the weaving off, pulled all but 30 or so threads from the reed and heddles, woud some extra yarn, placed some ends to the side, and began rethreading.

This is what it looks like, and although it isn’t pretty now, I expect that it will end up pretty well. This is the fun of weaving.

Trouble, and the bright side.

PLEASE NOTE: This piece has been donated to a lending Library, and is no longer available.

I had a little trouble measuring last week (That is what happens when you work late at night, lesson learned.), which means that the piece I was weaving ended up much shorter than planned. It was more than a little upsetting for me, but I fortunately have a very understanding client.

The upside of all of that is that my client (who is ten kinds of awesome for being so understanding) has a custom spot, and someone will get a really nice piece of weaving.

Here are the details:

The piece is 2.45m long (8 feet), 69cm (27″) wide, with straight hemmed ends.  It is a cotton warp in oranges/pinks/turquoise, and the black cotton weft forms a herringbone twill pattern.

This piece is for sale for $200, plus actual shipping. This is an “in-stock” item, and as such is a final sale. I will ship it within three business days of receiving payment, with insurance and tracking. Once the item is shipped, I will send an invoice for the actual cost of shipping.

Here are a couple of photos of the actual piece.

Semi Custom Fabric Draw

ON Thursday, September 25, at 9 am EST I will be holding a draw for a piece of this warp:

Beach 4

This warp is all cotton, and the winner will have a choice of cotton, cotolin, or mercerized cotton for the weft, in their choice of colour. The weave options are plain weave, twill, and vertical zigzag twill.

This warp will be going on the loom late this week, or early next week.

The winner will be required to pay a deposit of $150 ($50 non-refundable) within 24 hours after I send out the email notifying them of their win. The balance of the payment (Prices start at $85/m for cotton weft with this cotton warp) will be due after I finish the fabric.

All you need to do to enter, is to send me an email (kathy@rocklakeweaving.com), requesting to be entered, before Thursday at 9am.  Anyone is eligible to enter, all custom policies (which can be seen on my policies page, on this site) are in place for this fabric.

For those of you on my email list, you should have already received an email, telling you how to get two entries into this draw.  If you are NOT on my email list, when you send that entry email, ask to be put on the list, and you will get all the exclusive/preferred offers in the future.  I will not add you to my email list, unless you request it. (So ask, because I am a nice person who sends out nice emails once in a while.)

Coming up next….

I just took some bright colours off the loom today. I will have the fabric finished this week, and I will be putting a scarf warp on the loom, to weave off a scarf for a close friend. After that, I will empty out a big box of yarn, and will put this on the loom:

Beach 4

It makes me feel tropical, just looking at it!  The colour geek in me can’t stop thinking about what various greens, reds, grays, and even pinks and yellows would look like…..

There will be some extra warp length on this one, so watch out for the details, coming soon!

(Email list, you will get an email about this, there will be a special offer for you!)

Check your email!

I just sent out a message to my email list with the details of a draw that will be taking place tomorrow morning.

If you are on my list, check it out. If you are not on my list, you are unfortunately not eligible for this draw. The good news is that all you have to do to be eligible for all future draws is to send me a quick email (kathy@rocklakeweaving.com), asking to be on my email list.  I don’t give away my contacts, and you will hear about ALL the happenings here at Rock Lake Weaving.

Here is a little teaser for you:
